The 5-Second Wall (South Africa)

Printable spelling posters · one payment · no subscription

Stop being your class's human dictionary: count the “How do you spell…?” questions fall in 2 weeks, even if your learners have ignored every poster you've ever put up.

30 spelling posters sorted by the sound a child hears, put up six at a time — without having to be a spelling expert, without printing hundreds of sheets, without a subscription and without a project that eats your weekend.

If this is your writing time, this is for you

You're not doing it wrong. Asking you is just faster than looking.

You answer the same spelling question fifty times a day.

‘Miss, how do you spell…?’ again, and by Thursday your voice has gone.

You lose your reading group to a line of raised hands.

You're listening to one child read when the fifth hand goes up, and everyone waits while you spell a word.

You put posters up and watch your learners walk past them.

A free print-out, a home-made chart, a word mat: a day of interest, then it's wallpaper.

You lose your Sunday printing a wall nobody can find anything on.

Pages of colour ink, a queue at the school printer, and the right poster still isn't where a six-year-old looks.

What changes

Six things no other set of spelling posters gives you.

1

You stop being the first person they ask.

The wall answers first: learners hear the sound, follow the colour and find the spelling themselves.

2

You hear every child in your reading group read to the end.

No more stopping mid-sentence to spell a word for someone across the room.

3

You print the first six posters tonight, in about 10 minutes.

A week-by-week plan decides the order, so there is nothing to plan and nothing to choose.

4

You stop printing the whole wall at once.

Every poster comes in colour and in an ink-saver version, and you print six at a time.

5

You stop dreading the question ‘but why?’.

The Back-Pocket Rule Guide gives you the rule, the why and the exception in one line per poster.

6

You see the difference on paper, in your own handwriting.

Tally the questions for a week before and a week after, and the number is yours.

The method

Make the wall faster than you.

Your learners ask you because you're the fastest dictionary in the room. Most spelling posters lose that race. They're sorted by the name of the rule, which is how a teacher thinks, not how a six-year-old listens. And a wall of hundreds is just wallpaper: nobody can find anything on it.

The Faster-Than-You Method: thirty posters sorted by the sound a child hears and split into five colour zones, so any learner can find the one they need in five seconds. You put them up six at a time, teach a 5-minute lesson — wall, whisper, then me — and count the questions to see it work.

Most posters ask you to know the name of the rule first.
This wall asks you to listen first.

Five seconds is the test, not a promise: time one learner in your own room.

How it works

Three steps, and your number in two weeks.

1

You print the first twelve posters and the count sheet.

Two sittings of about 10 minutes, six posters at a time, in colour or in ink-saver.

2

You count one ordinary week.

Before anything goes up, tally the spelling questions in one writing session each day. It takes seconds.

3

You put the wall up and teach the 5-minute lesson.

On Monday the first twelve go up, then it's wall, whisper, then me. Count for another week and compare your two numbers.

Yes, I want my writing time back

Ten minutes at a time. Nothing to plan.

A look inside

The Count-or-Refund Guarantee — 60 days

If your count doesn't fall, you don't pay.

Put up the first twelve posters, teach the 5-minute lesson, and count your learners' spelling questions for one week before and one week after on the Ask-Count Sheets. If your second week isn't at least a third lower, email us both sheets within 60 days of buying and we refund every rand. You keep everything.

The guarantee is about your number, not about whether you liked it. You can check it on your own sheets, and so can we.

Questions teachers ask first

What people ask before they buy.

I've put posters up before and my learners ignored them. Why would this be different?

Most posters are sorted by the name of the rule and then left on the wall. These are sorted by the sound a child hears, in five colour zones, and the set includes a 5-minute Look-First lesson that teaches the class to check the wall before they ask. The 5-second test shows you, in your own room, whether a child can find one.

Why only 30 posters? Other bundles have hundreds.

Because a wall of hundreds is wallpaper: a child can't find the one they need, and you can't print them all. These 30 are built from the statutory spelling list for Years 1 and 2 in England's national curriculum, plus the look-alike words children mix up, and you put them up six at a time.

Does it work with the phonics programme my school uses?

It sits alongside any programme. The posters are organised by sound, not by lesson number or programme name. It doesn't teach reading: it's what learners look at while they write.

What ages and countries is it for?

Ages 5 to 8: Reception to Year 3 in England, Junior Infants to 2nd class in Ireland, Grade 1 to 3 in South Africa. British spelling throughout.

How much ink and paper does it take?

Every poster comes in full colour and in an ink-saver version. You print six at a time, not the whole wall at once.

How is this different from the free printables I can find online?

Use them for a single rule. What they don't give you is a system: sound-first order, a 5-week plan, the lesson that teaches the class to look, and a count that shows whether it worked.

Is it a subscription?

No. One payment, yours for life.

When do I get it?

Once your payment is confirmed, by email, within 48 hours at most.

And if the questions don't drop?

The Count-or-Refund Guarantee: do the count on the Ask-Count Sheets, and if your second week isn't at least a third lower, send us both sheets within 60 days of buying and we refund every rand. You keep everything.

One last thing

Next Monday, your learners can check the wall before they ask you.

Thirty posters, a five-week plan and a count that shows whether it worked, with three gifts while the timer runs and a 60-day guarantee behind it.
